Teachers Aren’t Showing Off – They Just Want to Inspire You.

I used to think that some of my teachers were showing off by putting their feet behind their head, doing handstands or some crazy arm balance. At some point, I realized it’s because they want to show that it is humanly possible to do it. Sometimes they push you a little more because they know you’re being complacent in an easier modification.

I definitely know this now because when I try to teach arm balances and inversions, I want the students to TRY and HAVE FUN with something totally crazy. I want them to realize it’s okay to fall on their face, roll over or look totally goofy and stupid in the meantime. I wasn’t born doing Bakasana (crow.) The first time I actually tried it, I held it for 1/10th of a second – and what a glorious 1/10th of a second it was.

Now I feel like I can hold it forever AND I can jump back to chaturonga.

Just try.

What I learned as a Yoga Teacher Part I

Your pants are probably more see-through than you realize.

While adjusting students, I’ve noticed that 50% of the pants out there are see-through. So much so that I can read “PINK” splattered across the bum of your Victoria’s secret undies. The funny thing is, I don’t really judge and I don’t really care. This was more of an observation is anything. It does make me wonder how bad my pants show through… If you are worried about flashing your teacher, you might want to do a bend over test when you buy new pants. I haven’t seen too many issues with the people who buy higher end pants (e.g. Lululemon, Lucy, Nike.) Just saying…

Power Yoga vs. Vinyasa Yoga

I’ve pondered this question many many times. Generally, I have heard that power classes are harder the vinyasa.

I’ve taken some very difficult vinyasa classes where I came out drenched in sweat. I’ve taken easy power classes where I’ve felt good enough to take another class right afterwards.

So what’s the difference?

Well, when I teach a power class, I make it slightly more cardio oriented. There are a lot more mini-vinis, stretching holds aren’t as long, but strength and energizing poses are emphasized. There is also a little more focus on core and upper body.

For vinyasa, expect a little more hippy-love. I’ll admit I’m not as good with the vinyasa dialogue as I could be, but I’m working on it. Vinyasa is more breath and mind-focused, and a lot more meditative overall. Greater emphasis is placed on slow steady movements and slow steady breathing.

Of course, I could be totally wrong, but this is just my interpretation… and this is what you can expect from my classes! Expect a little butt-kicking either way.
